Trick-or-treating?going from house to house in search of candy and other goodies?has been a popular Halloween tradition in the United States and other countries for an estimated 100 years. But the origins of this community-based ritual, which costumed children typically savor while their cavity-conscious parents grudgingly tag along, remain hazy. Possible forerunners to modern-day trick-or-treating have been identified in ancient Celtic festivals, early Roman Catholic holidays, medieval practices and even British politics.

TRICK OR TREAT HELP #8. You can’t eat any candy until we all get home. Be sure to carefully check the candy. When you are finished trick-or-treating, throw away any candy that is not in its original wrapper, or looks as though it has been opened. DO NOT allow children to eat any of the candy before it is inspected!

the taste in Hallowe’en festivities now is to study old traditions, and hold a Scotch party, using Burn’s poem Hallowe’en as a guide; or to go a-souling as the English used. In short, no custom that was once honored at Hallowe’en is out of fashion now.[13]

Also new this year is Blaze: The Soundtrack Volume II. Building on the success of last year’s soundtrack, Historic Hudson Valley teamed up with professional musician, radio personality, and Halloween fanatic Richard Christy to create a second volume of all-original music, selections of which will play throughout the event. The soundtrack is available as a CD at the event and also a digital download from iTunes and Google Play.

Oct. 23 Tapestry Strings performs movements from quartets by Mendelssohn, Grieg, Gershwin and d’Indy. Catherine Noll, Janet George, Peggy Swafford and Gayle Budd O’Grady will be joining talents for the event. Oct. 30 Michael Barnes, organist and friends will present a creepy prelude to Halloween on the restored Hook & Hastings tracker organ of 1883.
